Study Guide: God’s Desire to Restore and Heal Us for Abundant Life

by | Nov 12, 2024 | Restoration, Study Guide | 0 comments

Introduction

God’s desire for humanity is not just for survival but for abundant life—life marked by physical, emotional, and spiritual wholeness. In the Bible, God repeatedly expresses His intention to heal, restore, and provide a hopeful future for His people. Below is a study guide based on biblical passages that outline God’s promises and principles for healing and restoration.

1. God’s Original Plan: Life and Wholeness

Scripture:

  • Genesis 1:31 (KJV): “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.”
  • Genesis 2:7 (KJV): “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

In the beginning, God created everything to be good, including mankind. Man was created in perfect health and wholeness. Sin disrupted this perfection, but God’s plan is to restore us to the abundant life He intended.

2. God is the Healer

Scripture:

  • Exodus 15:26 (KJV): “If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.”

God reveals Himself as “Jehovah Rapha”—the God who heals. His covenant with Israel included healing as they obeyed Him. This promise is still relevant to believers today.

3. The Promise of Restoration and Abundant Life

Scripture:

  • Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV): “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
  • John 10:10 (KJV): “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

God’s plan is to give us hope and a future, which includes not just spiritual salvation but also physical and emotional healing. Jesus came so that we could have abundant life—a life filled with peace, health, and prosperity.

4. Faith and Healing: Trusting in God’s Promises

Scripture:

  • Isaiah 53:5 (KJV): “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
  • Mark 11:24 (KJV): “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross made provision for our healing. Just as we trust Him for salvation, we must have faith in His power to heal. Faith is the key to receiving God’s promises for healing.

5. Healing in the Ministry of Jesus

Scripture:

  • Matthew 4:23 (KJV): “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.”
  • Matthew 8:16-17 (KJV): “When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.”

Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated the will of God by healing the sick. He healed all kinds of diseases, showing that God’s desire is always to bring healing and restoration.

6. Praying for Healing and Restoration

Scripture:

  • James 5:14-15 (KJV): “Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
  • 1 John 5:14-15 (KJV): “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”

God invites us to bring our needs to Him in prayer. The church is encouraged to pray in faith, trusting that God hears and answers, bringing both physical and spiritual healing.

7. Healing and Restoration of the Soul

Scripture:

  • Psalm 23:3 (KJV): “He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
  • Psalm 147:3 (KJV): “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”

God’s healing isn’t limited to our physical bodies. He also restores our souls—our emotions and inner being—when we are brokenhearted or wounded by life’s challenges.

8. Walking in Health and Prosperity

Scripture:

  • 3 John 1:2 (KJV): “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”
  • Proverbs 4:20-22 (KJV): “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.”

God desires for us to walk in health, but this requires that we align ourselves with His Word and His ways. His Word brings life and healing to those who follow it.

9. The Future Restoration: Ultimate Healing in Christ

Scripture:

  • Revelation 21:4 (KJV): “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

While God desires to heal us in this life, there is an ultimate restoration coming where all sickness, pain, and death will be removed forever. In eternity, we will experience the fullness of God’s healing.

Key Takeaways:

  • God’s original intent for humanity was perfect health and wholeness.
